A long time ago
I buried my soul

I took the dirt
from the ground
Into my hands
and scooped it
Until there was
a flat sound

Hole which then
I stuck it and
Buried it beneath
a bowl of water,

I caught her
when she was just
About to drown,
and when I went
To put her down,
she said, “what
Are you doing? I was
having a swim!”

Oh what the soul thinks is what,
On a rushed whim – and from that

Only I can say I’ve sinned enough
For God to punish me, and for
the devil to keep slapping his
knee

but what I
remember most

Is feeling at peace;
feeling like me
